Excerpt:

Ambrose

Many would argue that I should give up the search for my soulmate. They feel that I don’t have a soul. Just because I’m undead doesn’t mean I don’t have a soul. At least that’s the way I see it. The search for my partner has been going on for over a century without anyone being able to sway my opinion. Sitting here in the shadows watching the onyx haired beauty reading under the dim glow of a desk lamp I know my persistence has paid off.

There is a pull I feel between her soul to mine calling me to her, but I stay in the shadows. Nothing good will come from us being together. She’s light and life and I’m darkness and death.

Hours pass as I sit watching her. Contentment takes over her as she falls further into her story. A need to know her wears on me, to know a way to make a smile light her face every day for the rest of eternity. Eternity, that’s the problem. I have it, she doesn’t. As much as I need her I will not be the one to change that, so I must keep my distance.

A tiny squeak escapes her as she marks her spot in her book and stretches. A growl escapes me at the thought of what it would be like to learn every one of her little noises. Her eyes dart up as the sound travels through the empty space, slinking back I make sure she can’t see me. She shakes her head as if she’s trying to convince herself the noise was nothing and gathers her belongings.

The evening is dimly lit and hazy with the glow of the full moon passing through the cloudy night sky. She stands at the top of the steps ready to walk home by herself. The night is full of monsters she can’t even fathom. I can’t let her put herself at risk. Grabbing the security jacket I acquired to help me fit in; I round the corner of the library coming up behind her. I can hear her heartbeat race as I follow her. I call out hoping it will calm her some, “Hey, hold up a second.”

She stops reluctantly but seems to settle when she reads security written on my jacket. I can feel her eyes taking me in assessing if it’s safe to be talking to me. I place my hand on her shoulder and introduce myself “HI, I’m Ambrose. Need an escort home?”

“Sure. Thanks. It’s not far.” Her voice is soft and melodic. I need to hear more. We walk the few short blocks to her dorm room making polite small talk. Standing in front of her dorm my muscles are tight from physically stopping myself from taking her into my arms and making her mine. I have made sure she was safe and that’s where it needs to end. I refuse to bring her into my darkness.

Ho pianto, molto, a ogni pagina.

So che prima o poi crollerai, e anch’io crollerò.

****

I picked and requested this book for a review because I liked the cover and I didn’t even read the storyline. And this book really surprised me.

Emotional, touching, especially for someone like me that have faced the struggle and the pain to see the one I loved to be consumed and taken away for an incurable cancer.

I cried, a lot, at every page. I felt a real connection with Michelle and Dylan. It takes courage to stay strong, to be the rock for someone else and survive after the storm.

And in the middle of Hell there is the love story between Lana and Dylan, and it’s like a piece of Paradise.

And when Dylan went for his memorial tattoo I cried all day long, because I did the same (in memory of my brother) a few weeks ago.

I felt deeply connected with all the characters. When you’re in the middle of the storm you feel desperate, helpless and alone. But if you look around you, you’ll always find your “rock”.

“…nobody can be strong all of the time. I know you are going to fall apart and so am I. We need to fall apart together that way we have each other to hold up the broken pieces so we can get through this.”

Sometimes I felt so shaken that I needed to close the book for a moment, to work through my feelings.

“That’s what sucks about death, the living are all a little damaged by the loss and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. We all knew it was coming, but it doesn’t make it any easier to handle.”

The story and the writing is simple and it is this simplicity in telling a story so sad and touching that makes this book so beautiful.

“What Roy and Michelle had, even though it ended before they were ready was the most amazing love. It was epic, tragic, and magical. If it was a love story, it would span the ages. I don’t know that there is a love out there that could be as amazing as the love between the two of them, but I would like to try to find a love like that.”

I loved how the author highlighted the concept that we need to build goods memories of the people we love because they’ll be the goods memories to help us to overcome the sadness and the void.

“That tattoo Dylan has is for him to look at and remember your daddy. I know sometimes it can be sad when you miss him, but the way to make yourself happy is to remember all of the good times you shared with him. All of the happy memories are important to hold onto and share.”

The end of the book seemed to me a little bit rushed, but left me with the curiosity to read about Carrie and Cory.

5 Star Review from Page Turners Book Blog

on November 17, 2015
This was the perfect title for this book. Carrie has been devastated by the betrayal of her ex-boyfriend and moves away from all she knows to start again. She meets Cory and the sparks fly but they both are dealing with problems that threaten their happiness and need to learn to trust in themselves as well as each other. Beginning a relationship based on sex seems to be the perfect solution but eventually feelings grow deeper and each one wants more but are they willing to take the risk? Can their love survive when outside forces threaten to tear them apart? This was such a good story that was well written and enjoyable to read. The connection between Carrie and Cory was sexy and charming. I liked this story a lot and recommend it to everyone.
